What Happens in a First Therapy Session?

A guide from Bridget Moore, LCSW. General information, not medical advice.

Bridget Moore, LCSW

The Short Answer

My first therapy appointment is a 60-minute intake. I ask about what brought you in and the history that helps me understand it, then we begin setting goals together. You do not need to tell everything in a perfect order. I can ask questions, slow down and explain why a topic might matter.

Start With What Brought You Here

I usually want to hear what has felt difficult recently and what led you to contact me now. An argument, a move or a week of constant worry can give us a starting point. You can also say that you are having trouble putting it into words. We can work from a specific moment.

The History I Ask About

The intake includes mental health, medical, social, family, educational and work history. I ask about these areas because the current problem does not happen in isolation. Your sleep, relationships and responsibilities may affect the same worry in different ways. You can ask why I am asking a question or tell me a topic feels difficult.

You Have a Say in the Pace

A first appointment is a conversation, not a test of how well you explain yourself. I do not need every detail of an earlier experience immediately. If you feel overwhelmed, tell me. We can decide what to cover now and what to return to, while still gathering enough information to discuss your care.

Setting Goals Together

I ask what you would like to be different in ordinary life. That could mean spending less time replaying a decision, speaking up at work or keeping contact with friends when your energy drops. We can turn a broad wish into something we can revisit. A goal is a working plan, not a promised result.

I want to understand your week before deciding with you what to work on.

In Person or Online

For an in-person intake, my office is at 1000 Bridgeport Ave, Suite 307, Shelton, CT 06484. Parking details are shared before your first visit. Online, you need privacy and a stable connection, and must be physically in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey or Rhode Island. Let me know your expected location when we discuss scheduling.

What Comes After the Intake

We discuss 45-minute individual sessions weekly or every other week and practical skills to try between them. The intake fee is confirmed during your free consultation. If you want to ask about my approach before meeting, reach out for that call. This explanation is general information about my practice, not medical advice or an assessment of you.
