Therapy at School in One State and Home in Another
A guide from Bridget Moore, LCSW. General information, not medical advice.
The Short Answer
School and home can be in different states without automatically requiring two therapists. I am licensed in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island. If you are physically in one of those states for every session, we can discuss continuing together across the school year, breaks and summer. Your location on the appointment day is the deciding detail.
Two Addresses, One Location Check
I do not decide eligibility from your campus address alone. A family visit, a school break or a summer stay can put you somewhere different. Tell me which state you will be in before we schedule, then confirm your physical location when we meet. A permanent address does not override that check.
Plan Before the Semester Ends
When your school calendar changes, bring the dates into our conversation. I want to know about travel days and where you expect to spend the break. We can talk through daytime appointments without assuming your summer routine will look like your semester routine. You can raise these questions even before your plans are final.
What Continuity Can Preserve
Starting over can mean explaining your family, academic pressure and relationship concerns again. When our appointments can continue, I can keep those conversations in view while we discuss a different setting. A return home may change your responsibilities or bring familiar tensions back. We can address those without treating the break as a pause in your life.
A Lunch Hour Between Classes
An online appointment needs a private place and a stable connection, not just an opening on the class calendar. I keep weekday daytime hours. We can discuss a slot between classes or around lunch if that works with availability. I would ask how that setting lets you speak without classmates or roommates listening nearby.
I can keep school and home in the same conversation when session locations allow it.
Bridget Moore, LCSWIf a Break Takes You Elsewhere
Do not join a session from a state outside Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey or Rhode Island. Let me know beforehand so we can discuss rescheduling or another plan. The rule applies to a short visit as well as a long stay. For an extended absence, ask about care options before the break begins.
When to Ask for Support
If comparison, homesickness or worry about returning to school is filling your day, you can contact me without waiting for grades to suffer. I use this guide as general information, not medical advice. A conversation about your actual school and home locations can clarify the practical questions before we talk about therapy goals.
